Inspiration: The fans of Ancient Japan and China

I love to see how much can be covered in one lesson and the students still grasp it all. In this lesson we cover the history of the Silk Road, the cycle of the Bombyx Mori (silk worm moth), and Chinese calligraphy.
These still life paintings were inspired by various artists who have taken on the traditional tasks of recording the things around them only as they see them.

Students used Egyptian hieroglyphs to design a tiny cartouche with their name or initials. I think I had as much fun as they did watching them shrink in our polymer clay oven.
