Greek Columns

Paper Sculptures of Greek Columns.                                                                                                           Students got into groups of threes and helped one another  to create a  column of each order.

Students divided the paper into three columns. They took notes as we read about each Greek column order and then they drew each column using examples and their notes.

Greek Coins

This week we studied the history of Greek coins, including their present involvement in the Euro. The students first drew their own coin designs using ancient Greek coins as inspiration. On Thursday, they created the coins  above using polymer clay and gold/silver paint, practicing relief sculpting and mold making skills. Some students turned their coins into necklaces. This is something that is commonly done with ancient Greek coins, as they are the only ancient Greek artifacts that can still be bought and sold.

Intro to the Elements of Art

The assignment was to fold a 9"x12" paper in half three times to create 8 rectangles. In the first you list the 7 Elements of Art. In each of the other rectangles, you write one element and draw a picture focusing on that element.

Teaching is the best way to continue learning.

It's almost impossible to teach a lesson the same way twice. Every time I teach something the students ask different questions and also give different responses to what I present to them. Both of these make me research and change the way I present a lesson. Along the way, I also find that some things work and others don't or need adjustments. I find this is most true when dealing with time.

I must say, teaching definitely keeps me on my toes. This blog serves as my way of sharing with you the process and the final product--wonderful student art. It would also be great if you would share with us what you and your students are doing. Thank you for visiting. Mrs. Elizabeth  and Sixth grade art students at Taft Middle School.
